Fall 2010 ClassesBelow the following two notes are the details on class descriptions, fees, and openings.
A note about teachers: All classes have volunteer teachers, but some teachers would like a "team teacher" to take turns teaching each week. Teachers' children have highest priority, so by team teaching just one class you can guarantee your children's places in co-op all day. Team teaching a class is the only way to guarantee your children's spot in co-op all day. When you email to pre-register, let us know if you are interested in team teaching a class to ensure a spot in co-op for fall; otherwise, let us know where else you would like to help, such as help in certain classes, organize the storage closet, plan the geography fair or end-of-semester luncheon, or work in the nursery.
A note about full classes: Some classes are full. However, there are still two ways to possibly secure a spot:
First, teachers' children and siblings of high schoolers have priority. If you are willing to team teach a class, then it's possible your child will have higher priority than one or two others in the full class, and you can still secure a space. Also, if you have high schoolers, then their younger siblings have priority (after teachers' children), so you may still be able to secure a spot. Email to inquire in either case.
Second, so many things happen over the summer that many families signed up now may end up having to withdraw before final registration. Get on the waiting list if your child is interested in a class that's full. There's still a chance he can get in.

Cultivating a strong writing style by using variety in sentence structure, vocabulary, and content will strengthen the students' compositions. To those ends, over the semester students will write and revise 4 essays as homework assignments. All essays will be graded using a standard rubric. However, parents will determine final grades and assign grammar, vocabulary and additional reading at home during the week. A suggested reading list of classic world literature will be emailed to parents. (NOTE: Homework is due on first day of class!! Parent(s) must pick up syllabus at registration.)

Teacher: Ellen Bartlett
Credit: 1

There have been some changes made, such as: 1) more colorful illustrations and higher-quality drawings, 2) more experiments, with some changes to existing ones to make them more interesting and easier to perform, and 3) an appendix that contains questions covering the entire course with answers provided in the solutions and tests manual.
Additional Supplies: Notebook and Index cards
Maximum number of students: 12
Openings: This class is full.
Description: This course covers topics such as the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, weather, the structure of the earth, environmentalism, the physics of motion, Newton’s Laws, gravity, and astrophysics. We will cover Modules 1-6 in the fall semester and Modules 11-16 in the spring semester. Modules 7-10 must be completed at home during the winter break. Students will be required to read the assigned pages for the week and answer all of the “On Your Own” questions, as well as complete the Study Guide at the end of each Module. They will also make vocabulary cards and memorize every week. We will go over their work in class and do fun experiments. The experiments will reinforce the concepts learned that week. (NOTE: Homework is due on first day of class!! Parent(s) must pick up syllabus at registration.)
Important Parental Notes:
1. Apologia’s Physical Science covers a lot of interesting and detailed information, far too much to be taught in one hour per week. Therefore, it is critically important that parents take an active role in the home portion of the class. This includes making sure that your child fully comprehends the concepts covered and that all assigned work is completed. This will ensure their full participation in all class discussions and experiments.
2. Algebra concepts will be used in this course. Generally, your child should be capable of working with fractions, calculating rates and applying general equations and unit multipliers. The author recommends that students complete a pre-algebra course before starting this program.

Description: Whether taking the ACT for the first time or taking it again to improve a score, all the “experts” say that proper preparation is essential to success. McGraw Hill's ACT provides excellent preparation through in-depth reviews of every test subject and question type, full-length practice tests, and valuable time- and stress-management skills that will help students stay calm, focused, and ready to do their best. Over the semester, we will cover the book a section at a time in preparation for taking the ACT (no writing) on December 11, 2010, or February 12, 2011. During the week, students will be expected to do sections at home for review, discussion and practice at co-op. This class will not be an intense, arduous “cram” course, but rather a valuable weekly opportunity for accountability and review, so homework is essential. To get the most from this class, students should study a minimum of 30 minutes to an hour each day rather than do all the homework in one sitting. The class will definitely prepare students for taking the test as well as reveal any significant gaps in their learning so they can focus on those areas before taking the ACT. Students should register for the ACT online at http://www.actstudent.org by November 5 for the December 11 test date, or by January 7 for the February 12 test date. If taking the test in February, plan to review at home during winter break. (NOTE: Homework is due on first day of class!! Parent(s) must pick up syllabus at registration.)
